How to Choose the Right Width for Your Exterior Vinyl Shutters

When selecting the perfect vinyl exterior shutters for your home, finding the right width is key to creating a balanced and attractive look. The width of your window - along with how close your windows are to each other - should guide your choice. Ideally you should find a single shutter width that complements all your windows for a consistent appearance.

Use the chart below to help guide your selection:

General Guidelines for Shutter Sizing:

  • For a traditional look, shutters typically range between 25% to 33% of the total window width including the window trim
  • When working with vinyl shutters on windows wider than 50 inches, we recommend using double-wide shutters (also known as bi-fold shutters) for proper proportion
  • If you prefer to avoid the bi-fold style, using 18” wide shutters will still maintain a good appearance
  • If you want your shutters to look functional - meaning they appear capable of closing over the window - aim for each shutter to be about 50% of the window glass and frame width, excluding the trim
  • Keep in mind, with vinyl shutters offering limited width options, it’s generally better to choose slightly narrower shutters rather than too wide
